Few wars can be summed up in a phrase like the one waged in Cuba against the Batista tyranny. It began with an attack on two barracks and ended with an attack on two barracks.
“Neither laugh, nor cry, understand,” said the Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza. And that maxim, which should be the compass of every social scientist when studying human phenomena and processes, has guided the research of National History Prize winner José Abreu Cardet and Professor Emeritus of the Royal Military College of Canada, Hal Philip Klepak. Both seek a more human dimension of war.
As is customary in their vast historiographical production, they are interested, more than in the weapons, in the people who wield them, their motivations, their weaknesses, their fears, the causes they defend, the impulse that leads them to make the decision to give their lives.
We have much to thank for their rigor and objectivity, which, together with committed passion, gives us such relevant and necessary contributions as this one, on the path to better a better understanding of the historical course of that extraordinary adventure called the Cuban Revolution.

Y esa máxima, que debiera ser brújula de todo científico social a la hora de estudiar los fenómenos y procesos humanos, ha guiado la investigación del Premio Nacional de Historia José Abreu Cardet y el Profesor Emérito del Real Colegio Militar de Canadá, Hal Philip Klepak, quienes buscan una dimensión más humana de la guerra.
Como ya es costumbre en su vasta producción historiográfica, les interesan, más que las armas, las personas que las empuñan, sus motivaciones, sus flaquezas, sus temores, las causas que defienden, el impulso que las lleva a tomar la decisión de entregar la vida.
