In the far northeastern part of Cuba there is a place so extraordinary that in 2001 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In this precious jewel of nature, exuberant tropical forests are interwoven with thousands of unique and special animals and plants, remarkable landscapes, and people who love their surroundings. This is Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, one of the most important protected areas in the Antilles for the conservation of biodiversity, water, soil and other natural resources.
Upon arrival at the park, one encounters a serene and beautiful world: a vast expanse of green; palm trees swaying gently in the breeze; the cheerful chirping of birds; and a crystalline blue cove. What secrets could this worldly paradise hold? Beneath its apparent tranquility is a dynamic world of more than 1,200 animal species and 1,000 plant species, many of which are endemic – unique to this place. The images and texts invite a closer look at the riches of the park that are often overlooked, but are accessible to everyone.
You are invited to discover the curiosities and mysteries of Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, named in honor of one of the world’s most renowned naturalists and explorers, whose research on the island in the nineteenth century earned him the designation of the “Second Discoverer of Cuba.”
